The chronicles remember lords and generals. Yết Kiêu was neither. He was a bond-servant — a crab-catcher from a river village — with one rare gift: he could hold his breath longer than any man alive, and go where a whole empire could not follow. This is his own book.
Yết Kiêu — roughly "yet kyew." His given name was Phạm Hữu Thế ("fam huu the"). "Yết Kiêu" was a war-name — the name of a legendary powerful beast — given to him by his lord, the great general Trần Hưng Đạo.
Much of Yết Kiêu's story is semi-legendary, and this book marks the seam every time. The loyalty of the held boat and the "six wing-quills" speech are from the royal chronicle. The diving method and the famous capture are from folk tradition. The magic spirit-buffalo is legend — the language of a people's love. You will always be told which is which.
